Staff VPN

The Staff VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service permits staff to make a secure, encrypted connection to Dublin Institute of Technology’s internal network using a remote computer from home or abroad.

A VPN connection ensures that the same level of network security and management policies established on the DIT data network are maintained when a member of staff is working from various remote locations. Staff using the VPN service are able to remotely access those DIT network services which are usually restricted to people who are situated in their office on campus.

It is worth noting that many DIT ICT services including email and personal file storage are available from outside DIT without any need to use the VPN.

Who can use this service ?

The Service is provided for current employees or authorised 3rd Party agents acting on behalf of Dublin Institute of Technology who require remote access in to Dublin Institute of Technology’s internal network for work-related purposes.


The service will provide secure access from computers connected to the Internet wherever they happen to be.
An approved operating system is required, with sufficient resources available to install and run the Juniper VPN client software, supplied by ICT Services. Staff members are responsible for providing their own Internet connection.

Authorisation is required for third party vendors to use the service and is granted on application to ICT Services through an appropriate area manager. The Service is only available on DIT issued computers or authorised 3rd Party agent clients and is available to DIT staff upon submission of a completed and signed Application Form.

The following operating systems are supported on the VPN service:

  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Windows 8 Pro
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows Vista Business 32-bit
  • Mac OS X 10.6 to 10.10 – there is currently no VPN solution for Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
  • Linux

The service operates on a basis of 24hr availability with support available from the Service Desk Mon – Fri from 9:00am to 12.30pm and 2.00pm to 5:00pm. In the event of an interruption to the service, maintenance on ICT equipment will be carried out at the first available opportunity inside normal network & operational schedules.
